Emergency Stop – How to do

emergency stop

LADA

Look Assess Decide Act
Quick reactions save lives. (45 ft per sec. At 30 mph) (
HC 117 – 122)
Braking is as normal, but quicker. Remember clutch before stopping.
Check the ability to stop at different speeds.
Practice will be needed to judge the correct amount of brake pressure taking into account the road and weather conditions.  The average reaction time is 0.7 of a second from seeing a problem to moving your feet to the pedals

WHEN BRAKING

No special signals.
Do not make a special point of looking in mirror.
Stop Quickly under Control. Using the footbrake to stop and applying clutch just before stopping.
Know how to brake using Rhythmic or Cadence method.

ABS is an extra system added to the car to help you in an emergency stop. If the system senses you about to lock your wheels it will set in action a system that will apply then release the disk brakes quickly thereby reducing the chances of skidding

REMEMBER

Once you have completed your emergency stop on the test secure the Hand Brake then put in Neutral. When the car is stationary

After Stopping Prepare Observe Manoeuvre 6 point observation before moving off. Signal if necessary.

LOSS OF contact with the road (SKIDDING)

The main cause is the driver:
Excessive Use of Controls i.e.
Over acceleration
Over braking
Over steering

CARE Keep both hands on the steering wheel.

Keep your eyes open.
Avoid braking so hard that you lock any of the wheels.
Leave the clutch pedal alone until just before you stop. Stalling is less important than stopping.
Leave the handbrake alone except to secure the car when stationary.
Think about what the stopping distances look like.
If you are made to take evasive action. Try to keep calm; do not take your frustrations out on other road users. TRY TO KEEP CALM

Emergency Stop

REMEDIAL ACTION for Skidding

If you lose contact with the Road you will need to regain contact as quickly as possible.  This is normally achieved by removing the cause so in over acceleration remove your foot off the accelerator.  In the case of over braking remove your foot off the brake pedal (easier said than done) but remember if you need to stop you will need to reapply the brakes but nor quite so hard. With over steering reduce the amount of turn.

OTHER FACTORS involved when doing the emergency stop

Vehicle Handling Characteristics (see further training notes)
Road conditions
Weather, wet, icy road, fog or rain                    (
