I’m sure the public is getting bored of being told not to use their mobile phone while driving. So, I want to talk about why it is dangerous to use a mobile phone while driving then look at what the Law now actually says.

Let’s assume that the Average length of a car is 4.5 meters. That means that at 30 mph, you are travelling at 30 mph you are going at 13.4 meters a second. The Highway Code claims the overall stopping distance is 23 meters and allows a reaction time of 9 meters which is two car lengths. That is the necessary information as drivers we might be given when learning to drive.

The ability of a car only changes with fixed factors such as road conditions and the wear and tear of the vehicles braking systems. There must be extra time allowed for the different distractions such as drink driving, Cannabis and Mobile Phones. This additional time must be combined with the reaction time of 9 meters.

So, let’s look at why it is dangerous to use a mobile phone while driving using this data Si I have converted it into car lengths so the average person and visualise how far the actual distances involved are. When Drink Driving, you travel an extra 15 meters that are 3.3 Car lengths. When using Cannabis, you can go an extra 16.2 Meters 3.6 car lengths that are bad enough. Now when you realise that this means you could be hitting a person when travelling at this speed before you even think of pressing your Brake pedal.

So let’s factor in the use of a Mobile phone when driving when using a mobile phone Handsfree you can travel extra17 meters 3.7 Car lengths. Now, this becomes very worrying for me when texting you can travel 18.4 Meters 4 Car lengths. When using a mobile phone handheld, you can move an extra 19.6 Meters 4.3 car lengths.

OK that is the facts, let’s look at this video (Warning the Images are Very Graphic)<
