ROUNDABOUTS

MIRRORS

MANOEUVRE          How to Commence the manoeuvre at a Roundabout

POSITION

Turning left – keep well to the left                  (HC 182)
Turning right – left of centre wheels straight
Going straight on – keep well to the left                           (
HC 179 – 181)

UNLESS ROAD MARKING OR SIGNS INDICATE OTHERWISE.
Practice positioning the car depending on road conditions.

SPEED

Not too fast, or too slow on approach. Use brakes to slow. Select the appropriate gear: first if you need to stop or second when at walking pace, depending on what you see.

GEAR

Remember the Brakes are to Slow & the Gears are to Go. So from you experience try to judge what speed you need to approach the Crossroads at try to get down to that speed before you arrive at the crossroads. Do not Coast. No more than 2 – 3 Car lengths. Slowest speed at point of turn. Practice slowing and stopping at different speed sometimes using gears and clutches control. Practice stopping before junction, to start with it is better to stop a car length before the junction then creep forward than over run. Giving priority to pedestrians already crossing. Stop if necessary. Try not to be pressured into rushing into a manoeuvre by other traffic or circumstances.       (HC 102 & 146 )

LOOK

Check the main mirror, and the relevant side mirror, to see if it is still safe. Scanning is again different for this type of junction. THINK, “What do you assume is on the roundabout?” Look around as you approach the junction for pedestrians, cyclists and cars. Be prepared to give way to other road users who might have priority over you. When in the new road make another mirror check to see if anything has followed you in.                  (HC 121 )

EMERGING & ENTERING

Decide on the type of junction: A Closed Junction is a junction that you can not see if it is clear to emerge as you approach. An Open Junction is one that you can make a decision as to whether it is safe to go at least a couple of car lengths before the road markings. 

Remember that the observations you need to make are not just Right Left Right but look to see if it is safe to emerge look out for motorcycles & cyclists. If there is an Obstruction remember it could hide other road users that could create you trouble as you emerge. Giving priority to pedestrians already crossing (HC 170 – 172) when approaching a junction is the speed and gear you use is CRUCIAL. This is controlled by what you see, look for the gaps. Creep & peep if necessary. When entering a junction consider using “Tyres & tarmac” for queuing if necessary. Consider the use of the handbrake if waiting for any length of time. Is the car in front going to move?

QUEUING

Be prepared to stop leave at least “Tyres & tarmac” providing room for vehicles ahead rolling back and an escape route for you.  Leave a safety space.

Consider the use of the handbrake if waiting for any length of time.  If you have been stationary for any time remember to give a blind spot check before moving looking for the Motorbike or Cyclist coming up the side of your car.

DEALING WITH ROUNDABOUTS        (HC 184 – 190)

Know how to recognise you are approaching a roundabout.
Give way to the right.
Remember to check the mirrors before signalling.
Know what if any traffic is going to stop you from entering the roundabout and what traffic is going to help you move out.
Try to check the mirrors and blindspots before signalling.
Know why to take extra care with long vehicles.
Know how cyclists and horse riders will negotiate the roundabout
Know how and when to signal when dealing with roundabouts.

MINI ROUNDABOUTS

Know how to recognise you are approaching a Mini Roundabout. Signal as though it were a crossroads. (Do not signal left unless you are turning left). Remember to give way to the right.

DUAL CARRIAGEWAYS

If on a Dual Carriageway move to the right hand lane to turn right then enter the new road in the left-hand lane.

MULTI LANE ROUNDABOUTS & MULTIPLE ROUNDABOUTS (HC 188 – 190)

Try to get into the correct lane as soon as possible. Remember to make sure it is safe before changing lanes this could include a blindspots check.

ON ALL ROUNDABOUTS

If going straight on keep to the left lane unless the road markings or a sign indicate otherwise. If the turning is past the 12 o’clock position, treat it as a right turn. Always allow at least two lanes on a roundabout where possible. You will be expected to signal when coming off a Normal Roundabout. Consider how to deal with Horses and Bicycles if they are on the Roundabout.

DO NOT ASSUME EVERYONE WILL APPLY THE RULES FOR ROUNDABOUTS. BE PREPARED TO TAKE EVASIVE ACTION.
